NEMA and IOM repatriate 126 Nigerians stranded in Libya

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) received 126 Nigerians stranded in Libya on Thursday in Lagos.

The citizens were brought back with the help of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) under a voluntary repatriation programme.

NEMA Acting Coordinator in Lagos, Ibrahim Farinloye spoke to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Farinloye said the Nigerians were received at the cargo wing of Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The returnees arrived on an Al Buraq Air Boeing 700-787 registered 5A-DMG.

They include 46 adult men, 62 adult women, two boys and six girls, and four girls and six boys.

Farinloye said many had been deceived by promises of resettlement assistance in Iraq, Egypt, Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, etc., but ended up in connection houses in Libya.

“We warn returnees to realize that there is no better country than Nigeria,” the official noted.

“There are many opportunities for all of us to prosper and live happily virtuous and God-fearing lives in Nigeria without exposing ourselves unnecessarily to undeserved dangers in foreign lands.”
