Newcastle 2-0 Leicester: Abject Foxes beaten as Magpies near end of trophy drought

Newcastle United are on the verge of lifting their first major trophy since 1955 after a 2-0 win over Leicester City in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup.

Eddie Howe has reversed all eight changes he made in Saturday's FA Cup third round loss to League One Sheffield United, and there has been a return to the bench after illness for Allan Saint- Maximin.

Leicester counterpart Brendan Rodgers took a similar approach, reinstating seven of the men who withdrew for the FA Cup trip to Gillingham with Marc Albrighton retained in place of injured Boubakary Soumare, the only change for the team which lost to Fulham in January. 3.

Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes could have opened the scoring twice in a blistering start for the hosts, and it took a fine save from goalkeeper Danny Ward to deny Longstaff in the 19th minute after his defense failed failed to clear a Kieran Trippier free kick.

Leicester responded sporadically with striker Patson Daka working hard to give them a focal point, but the first half ended scoreless despite Newcastle dominating.

The breakthrough finally came as full-back Dan Burn burst into the box and shot through Ward and inside the far post, his first goal for the club he supported in his childhood.

The Magpies doubled their advantage 12 minutes later when Joelinton ran over Almiron's perfectly weighted pass and fired past the helpless Ward.

Substitute Jamie Vardy squandered two chances to bring Leicester back into the game and the Magpies whistled with their 2-0 lead intact to secure their first trip to the last four since 1976.
