#NigeriaDecides2023: PDP at INEC: Transmit Election Results from Polling Stations to Server

Dino Melaye, the spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has sounded the alarm over the failure of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transmit election results from polling stations to its iREV server.

Mr. Melaye, who is also the PDP's agent, told the INEC collection center in Abuja on Monday that not transmitting these results circumvents the electoral process.

PREMIUM TIMES reports that Mr. Melaye earlier on Monday said the PDP may reject the election result due to INEC's failure to transmit the results.

Speaking to reporters, the former lawmaker noted that "in accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Law, Articles 60 and 64 as amended, there would be transmissions of results from polling stations directly to the server.

"And we found out that it wasn't done," Melaye said. "INEC failed in this regard."

As part of the process of improving election transparency, INEC had promised Nigerians that the results from each polling station would be transmitted in real time to the iREV portal after they were declared at the polling station.

However, this was not done on election day and many election results have still not been uploaded.

INEC attributed the issue to technical issues, saying its server was not compromised.

However, the PDP now views this apparent INEC failure as something that affected the integrity of the elections.

He said he was vehemently shoved by the chairman of INEC when he raised the issue and said that what article 47(3) emphasized was that wherever the card reader or the BVAS has failed, you cannot get a replacement and elections must be canceled in those areas.

Mr. Melaye also complained about the shortcomings of the BVAS machine.

"Now we have seen from Ekiti's results presentation that some places have been canceled due to the BVAS bypass," he said. “So the only way to know that BVAS has been bypassed is to see the uploaded results. And we insisted that the President show us here now the uploaded results state by state.”

"We're not here to rubber-stamp violations; we won't allow failure to continue. And the INEC president is testing his integrity."
