No plans to ban 'Okada' – FG

The federal government, through the Department of Transportation, said on Thursday that there are no plans to ban the use of commercial motorcycles commonly known as "Okada" as means of transportation in the country.< /p>

Minister of State for Transport, Ademola Adegoroye made the clarification during a speech in Abuja at the Annual Strategic Stakeholder Summit of the Amalgamated Commercial Tricycle & Motorcycle Owners, Repairs & Riders Association of Nigeria.

This clarification follows earlier reports of plans to ban okada as a form of commercial transportation, to reduce insecurity in the country.

Federation Attorney General and Minister of Justice Abubakar Malami had given the hint in July, saying, “Prohibiting the use of motorbikes and mining activities will reduce the supply of logistics for terrorists. This will be done in the national interest."

Speaking at the event, Adegoroye said the Federal Executive Council had not made any decision on the ban.

He said, "By the grace of God, I am a member of the Federal Executive Council, the highest decision-making body in this country today, and I have been there since July. I was appointed in June, I became a member and attended my first FEC on July 6 of this year.

"Let me assure you and assure ACOMORAN that there is no decision to ban Okada."

While congratulating the President of ACOMORAN, Prince Samsudeen Apelogun, for the successful organization of the event, the Minister added, “There are a few issues I would like to comment on.

“The federal government under the leadership of our father and our leader, President Muhammadu Buhari, also wants to put in place a public transport system that will not fail like those of the past.

"It is true that several governments in the past have done a thing or two to promote public transit and ensure that our citizens can move from place to place smoothly and easily.< /p>

"But no one is a repository of knowledge. No one has a monopoly on wisdom. ACOMORAN also has a right and a duty towards this country. So, we will consult."
