Osun: INEC issues 1.5 million PVC and promises transparent elections

Nigeria's electoral body, INEC, has pledged to ensure a level playing field for all political parties ahead of the July 16 gubernatorial election in Osun State.

Just three days before the end of the political parties' campaign, commission chairman Mahmood Yakubu said on Tuesday that the choice of state leadership now rests with the electorates.

Mr. Yakubu spoke at a stakeholder meeting in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, on Tuesday.

"For us at INEC, allow me to reassure political parties, candidates and the electorate that the choice of who will become the next governor of Osun State is entirely in the hands of voters.

"As I have repeatedly stated in previous stakeholder engagements, INEC will not take any action to the advantage or disadvantage of any political party or candidate. We let us focus on the processes and procedures provided for by law,” Mr. Yakubu reassured parties and candidates.

In a purely male-dominated contest, 14 gubernatorial candidates were fielded by 14 parties to challenge incumbent President Gboyega Oyetola of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Saturday's election.

The main candidates challenging Mr Oyetola are Ademola Adeleke of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), Yusuf Lasun of the Labor Party (LP), Oyegoke Omigbodun of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Akin Ogunbiyi of the Accord Party . (AP).

With the exception of Mr Adeleke who missed the Arise TV debate last week, many Nigerians again watched the five candidates on the Channels TV debate where they rolled out ways to tackle social issues and economics of the state if they were elected.

76% of total PVC collected

Mr. Yakubu said 1,479,595 of the 1,955,657 registered voters in the state collected their PVCs ahead of the ballot.

He called on all registered voters who have not yet collected their PVCs to take the opportunity of the additional measures to do so.

“We are also updating our records to provide a detailed breakdown of PVCs collected by polling stations. This will be concluded and made available on Friday, July 15, 2022,” Yakubu said.
