Pay for our benefits before you quit, Ekiti teachers tell Fayemi

Teachers in Ekiti State have urged incumbent Governor Kayode Fayemi to settle their outstanding allowances before his term expires on October 15.

Teachers owe months of unpaid salaries and retiree gratuities, but hope the governor can still do some "magic" before his term ends.

Teachers, who were at a ceremony on Wednesday in Ado Ekiti to commemorate World Teachers' Day, praised Mr. Fayemi for initiating commendable programs for the education sector.

Teachers, under the auspices of the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools (ASUSS) and the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), have warned the new government of Biodun Oyebanji not to jeopardize their welfare if a cordial relationship existed between the unions and the government.

ASUS President Sola Adigun, who spoke on behalf of the teachers, said teachers were still optimistic that some of their pending benefits would be paid within the next 10 days before Mr. Fayemi does not leave office.

“We have so many unpaid benefits. Our salary, promotion, pension and retiree gratuity arrears are there,” he said.

"We are confident that Governor Fayemi can still do the magic and pay before he leaves on October 16.

“However, we appreciate that the state economy was not so buoyant, but you can always make the teachers happy before you leave, while your successor will start where you left off.”

Teachers noted that the sector remains the fastest growing industry that needs all the resources to flourish.

Mr. Fayemi took the opportunity to reward outstanding primary and secondary school teachers with cars and cash gifts.

He said the quality of their teaching has exponentially increased school enrollment from 191,117 in 2018 to 261,292 in 2022.

Mr. Fayemi added that the increase in enrollment automatically leads to the need for 10 more secondary schools in 2021, while the government provides the matching fund of 6 billion naira to match UBEC's contribution to the execution of 886 projects.

"As I speak, under two World Bank-supported programs, AGILE and IDEAS, renovating structures/providing furniture and equipment in 202 schools and upgrading facilities in three technical colleges are ongoing,” he said.

“In addition, 1,558 teachers have been employed by SUBEB, TESCOM and BTVE over the past four years.

“So far, we have provided N655 million in operating grants to public schools in Ekiti State. Likewise, we have paid a total of N1,044,941,450 to enable 57,465 public school students to take the WAEC exam over the past four years. »
