Little 'embarrassed to watch' Liverpool trio this season, thinks 'something was broken'

Emmanuel Petit has hinted that he is "embarrassed to watch" three Liverpool players this season because they are making "so many mistakes".

Liverpool have been a shadow of their former selves at the start of this season and they look like a totally different side to the one who challenged for an unprecedented quadruple last season.

The Reds returned to winning ways in midweek by beating Rangers 2-0 at Anfield in the Champions League group stage.

Jurgen Klopp's side return to the league on Sunday as they take on league leaders Arsenal.

They have won just two of their opening seven league games and will need to show a much better performance if they are to beat the Gunners.

Liverpool are currently eleven points clear of former club Petit and the Arsenal legend thinks Sunday's opponents have 'so many weaknesses':

“When you look at Liverpool right now, they look so sloppy, terrible. Something has been broken in this team,” Petit told Compare.bet.

"This could be Liverpool's last chance to do anything this season, if they lose to Arsenal they will be 14 points behind after nine games. That's a huge gap.

"There are so many weaknesses. There are so many things wrong with Liverpool. There is something wrong with this team.

"Mentally, they are no longer the same unit they were for four or five years. Physically too.

"I think with the fact that [Sadio] Mane is gone, you can also see that something is missing up front. Salah is just a shadow of himself at the moment .

"The midfielder no longer controls the tempo, he no longer plays with character and personality. And in defense, my God. So many individual and collective errors, easily avoidable errors.

"They are not the same players as before. They do not have the same concentration, the anger to beat the other team, to hurt them, to put pressure on them.

"They don't run together anymore. Before, they used to run together, as a unit, and the opponent was afraid of them."

Petit slammed Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez because he “felt embarrassed watching them” this season:

"Sometimes during this season I felt embarrassed watching Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk and Gomez when he was playing. So many mistakes.

"[Gabriel] Martinelli is very confident, and every time he runs with the ball, he's so fast, so quick, and that's exactly what Trent doesn't like. Being one-on-one head with a player who can hurt him.

"I don't know how Trent is going to defend him, but the problem with Liverpool's defense is not just him.

"It's the whole defense, and when I say that, I mean the whole team, because they're starting from the front.

"They're not doing the same job all over the pitch as before, and that means the team is overstretched. I think Trent is very good with the ball, but he's one of the worst without him."
