Pogba's past comes back to extort him
August 30 - French police have opened an investigation into allegations by midfield star Paul Pogba that he is being threatened and targeted for extortion.
Pogba's allegations came after his brother Mathias posted a bizarre video online - in four languages (French, Italian, English and Spanish) - promising 'big reveals' about the Juventus ace.< /p>
A statement signed by the lawyers of Paul Pogba, his mother Yeo Moriba and current agent Rafaela Pimenta said the videos released on Saturday evening "unfortunately come as no surprise".
"They add to the threats and extortion attempts of an organized gang against Paul Pogba," the statement read.
"The competent authorities in Italy and France were informed a month ago and there will be no further comments regarding the ongoing investigation."
Mathias Pogba said that "the whole world, as well as my brother's supporters, and even more so the France team and Juventus, my brother's teammates and his sponsors deserve to know certain things".
Also a professional footballer, he said people needed to know what he knew to judge whether his brother "deserved his place in the France team and the honor of playing in the World Cup".< /p>
"This is all going to be explosive," he concluded without elaborating.
Reports based in France claim that large sums of money are being demanded from Paul Pogba if he wants to avoid the dissemination of the allegedly incriminating videos.
State broadcaster France-Info reported that Pogba told police that a group of childhood friends demanded 13 million euros and intimidated him on several occasions, saying he didn't support them after he became an international star.
The Paris prosecutor's office has confirmed that it opened an investigation earlier this month into attempted organized extortion, which is being handled by the anti-corruption police. He would not provide further details regarding an ongoing investigation.
Pogba, who won the World Cup with France in 2018, returned to Juventus on a free transfer this summer after six years at Manchester United and is currently out with a knee injury.
