Police charge three women for allegedly killing nursing mother and selling her twins

Enugu state police say they have charged three women who allegedly killed a breastfeeding mother and sold her newborn twins in the state.

State Police Spokesman Daniel Ndukwe revealed this in a statement on Friday.

He said the arraignment follows the conclusion of police investigations into the incident.

Mr. Ndukwe said the suspects were arrested on July 26 after receiving a report alleging they conspired and sold the newborn twins belonging to Chinenye Odoh, 31, whom they later killed.

He gave the names of the suspects as Cynthia Ukorie, 25, Pauline Onyia, 56, and Ijeoma Aroh, 39 - all residents of the state.

How did it happen

Ms Ukorie, the first suspect, sheltered the slain nursing mother, Ms Odoh, in her house while she was pregnant.

All the suspects had agreed with the deceased that the unborn children would be sold after delivery.

When she finally delivered the babies on July 5, Ms. Aroh, the second suspect, facilitated their sale by contacting Ms. Onyia, a nurse, and the third suspect, who brought in a couple who bought the babies.

Mrs. Aroh allegedly sold the babies for 3 million Naira, but lied to Mrs. Odoh that she sold the babies for 2,350,000 Naira, which she believed.

According to police investigations, Mrs Aroh then gave Mrs Odoh, the mother of the babies, the sum of N1.8 million as a share of the proceeds and handed over 50,000 Naira each to two other suspects - Mrs Ukorie and Oniya.

However, Ms Odoh later protested when she discovered she had been lied to about the amount of babies sold.

She therefore demanded her pay, inciting the suspects to conspire against her.

Mr. Ndukwe, a deputy superintendent of police, said one of the suspects, Ms Ukorie, apparently unhappy with the balance request, gave Ms Odoh poisoned corn, which she ate before she died. p>

The police spokesman said the suspects were on trial for conspiracy, child trafficking and murder.

The suspects have been remanded to Enugu Correctional Detention Centre, pending rehearing of the case, police said

Mr. Ndukwe said the case had been adjourned until October 5, but did not give details of the court where the suspects are being tried.
