Mr. Umar said the victim, who was the chief imam of the region, had returned from the mosque when the suspect, who was the second wife, allegedly mixed poison in his food.

He explained that as soon as Mr. Goni started eating, his condition deteriorated.

According to him, the victim was immediately transported to the state specialized hospital where he received emergency medical treatment, but unfortunately he died later when they returned home.

The Chief of Police immediately deployed men from the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department to arrest the suspect after the incident was reported by the victim's family to the GRA Police Station.

He noted that when the police arrived, they saw a large number of injured youths in the neighborhood who stormed the victim's home with the intention of lynching the suspect, but the police managed to bring the situation under control.

He added that the suspect, in her statement, confessed to the alleged crime, noting that she bought the poison at the Monday market when she had already made up her mind to kill him.

He said the case was filed as culpable homicide in the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions before she was charged in court.

The suspect, Fatima, who was paraded at the command, told NAN that she killed her husband because she was tired of marriage.

She said, "I never wanted marriage. Goni was my second husband; I separated from my first husband because I hate marriage.

"Every time I wake up to the fact that I'm married, it pisses me off. At one point, I had to run to my parents to demand the end of the marriage, but they always fired me asking me to be patient.

"At some point, two months after giving birth to my child, I ran away and slept in an unfinished building for about two weeks. I then returned to my husband.

"It's not that he doesn't treat me well, we don't argue either. There are two of us in the house, I'm his second wife and I've been married to him since 2021. But I hate when a man approaches me.

"I don't really know what's wrong with me. Even now that I'm talking to you, I don't really feel like I was the one who killed him," she said bursting into tears.
