Report says Man Utd 'will make an offer' for Gakpo in January as Ten Hag push for 'Ronaldo replacement'

Manchester United are reportedly planning a €50m (£43.1m) bid to sign PSV Eindhoven striker Cody Gakpo after his stellar World Cup performance.

Gakpo has impressed this season, scoring 13 goals and 17 assists for his club.

He wore his club form at this winter's World Cup with the Netherlands, before his side were beaten by runners-up Argentina in the quarter-finals.

There is a lot of interest in the 23-year-old, with Arsenal and Manchester United both considering a move when the transfer window reopens next month.

Both teams need a new striker, with Cristiano Ronaldo leaving United and Gunners No.9 Gabriel Jesus, who is set to miss three months after undergoing knee surgery.

Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag has admitted he is prioritizing the signing of a new striker after Ronaldo's departure.

"Yes, we want to sign a striker in January, but only when we find the right player," said Ten Hag. "We will do everything in our power."

Southampton and Leeds United both made offers to sign Gakpo last summer, but neither move materialized.

After his strong start to the season and his exploits at the World Cup, it is highly unlikely that Gakpo will settle for just one of these clubs, with all due respect.

A move to Arsenal or Manchester United will match his ambition, and signing certainly makes sense for either Premier League club.

United valued Gakpo at around €40m last summer, but are now preparing a €50m winter offer, according to The Telegraph.

Ten Hag wants the Dutchman to replace Ronaldo directly after the club put forward their search for a new striker.

United 'want to back' Ten Hag after being 'impressed' with his Old Trafford debut, and in particular his handling of Ronaldo.

The report says the Dutch coach 'wants' Gakpo, while the club are also interested in Benfica and Portuguese striker Goncalo Ramos.

PSV sporting director Marcel Brands says the sale of Gakpo should be a record deal for the club.

Their highest sale currently is Hirving Lozano's €45m move to Napoli in 2019, meaning United are set to break that record.

One player currently at United who the jury is out on is Jadon Sancho.

While Gabby Agbonlahor has encouraged United fans to stick with him, Graeme Bailey says Gakpo's potential arrival could put Sancho's future in jeopardy.
