Racing through the suspects, Command Police Public Relations Officer SP Chidi Nwanbuzor said Ogida Police Division made the arrest of the woman after a tip-off.

He said: "The Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ogida Police Division received information that a certain woman, Juliet Agbonifo, 45, had purchased a child in the Ogida area and had mobilized to the scene, and had arrested the woman."

"The woman led the police to the man, one Wilfred Egahae, 62, who sold the child to her for 400,000 naira. The woman who gave birth to the baby is not yet known and the baby is nine days old,” he added.

He said the suspects would be brought to justice after a thorough investigation.

Speaking to reporters, Wilfred said a Prosper Peter gave birth at his maternity ward where the baby was purchased, but denied knowledge of the transaction.

"The mother, Prosper Peter, gave birth at our facility and the buyer is linked to one of our nurses who linked them. I was not part of the negotiations but heard that the money was 400,000 naira. I called today and she said she was coming to the station but she did not come."

For her part, Juliette said her need for a baby prompted her to buy one.

"I bought the baby for 400,000 Naira and paid another 20,000 Naira to the hospital and paid the bills.

"I don't know the mother of the baby and the man (Wilfred) who sold me the baby said that after a few months he would do the normal things to get the matter covered."

She said the police learned of the crime when her son's girlfriend, who lived with her, reported it to the police due to a misunderstanding between them.
