Scudetto still a possibility for Inter, says San Siro goalscoring hero Martinez

Lautaro Martinez believes Inter can still catch up with runaway leaders Napoli in the race for the Scudetto, but admits the Nerazzurri cannot afford mistakes in the second half of the season.

The Argentine striker was the winner of the game against Hellas Verona on Saturday, with a third-minute strike - his ninth goal of the campaign - enough to secure a narrow 1-0 victory at San Siro.

Simone Inzaghi's side then moved level with third-placed Juventus, although they still trail Napoli by 10 points after 18 games.

Nevertheless, Martinez is convinced that the Nerazzurri have plenty of time to hunt the Partenopei.

"We knew it would be a tough game like this because Verona scores the man all over the pitch," Martinez told Sky Sport Italia. “We scored early and then did what we had prepared. It was important to get the three points today.

"It is possible [to catch Napoli] because there is still a long way to go. But we must not make any more mistakes; we must score all the points, otherwise they will be too far."

The game against Verona was Inter's fourth in the space of 11 days, a streak that began with a win over Napoli.

Most recently on Tuesday, Inter were pushed into extra time by Parma in the Coppa Italia, and Inzaghi felt the quick turnaround had taken its toll.

"We had just played 120 minutes on Tuesday, but the team stayed strong," Inzaghi said.

"We scored early and then, despite a bit of tension in the closing stages, we stayed solid and focused without suffering too much against a Verona side who could cause us problems.

"I was concerned about our physical condition with [Hakan] Calhanoglu and [Nicolo] Barella, who went to such lengths to be available today.

"They were in doubt until yesterday, when [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan, [Roberto] Gagliardini and [Kristjan] Asllani really helped in these games with their performances in midfield."
