Shohei Ohtani won't pitch for the L.A. Angels again this season, or maybe forever

Shohei Ohtani will not pitch for the remainder of the season due to a ligament tear in his right elbow , Los Angeles Angels general manager Perry Minasian said Wednesday night.

This may also be the last time Ohtani offers the franchise. He is expected to become a free agent this winter and, even with his injury, he should be one of the most sought after players by other MLB teams.

Ohtani previously had Tommy John surgery in 2018 on his UCL ligament. It is still not known if he will be operated on for this new injury.

But Ohtani is still an asset even if he doesn't pitch, as he leads the major leagues in home runs with 44. This is in addition to his 10 throw wins. He's still expected to be a designated hitter for the Angels, although his workload may decrease as the team gets further away from the playoffs.

If Ohtani finished for the year, he still had an impressive campaign. He has a 1.069 OPS plate and has pitched 132 innings with a 3.14 ERA on the mound.
