The 50 highest annual payrolls of the five major European leagues: Man Utd 5th…

Football is the most popular sport in the world and Europe is home to most of the biggest and richest clubs in the world. But who pays the most player salaries in Europe's top five leagues?

Often known as the 'Big Five', the top divisions of England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain are widely regarded as the most prestigious in world football.

And clubs from these nations normally dominate the knockout stages of the Champions League and Europa League, creating a cycle where their efforts are rewarded financially and increasing the gap between teams from other countries.

But there is one country that has a list of the highest annual payrolls of all: England. The Premier League is full of clubs who, thanks to lucrative TV deals, can pay players astronomical fees.

Even so, it is still surprising to see that Aston Villa pay more on wages than AC Milan, West Ham spend more than Napoli and Crystal Palace shell out bigger sums than Monaco and Valencia.

Towards the top of the list, PSG are miles ahead of everyone else - the salaries of Kylian Mbappe, Lionel Messi and Neymar alone are worth more than many clubs - while Barcelona and Real Madrid are also on the podium.< /p>

Manchester United are the highest ranked club in England, with a wage bill of £233m ranking fifth in Europe's top five leagues.

But what other surprises does the list contain? Take a look below for the full top 50 ranking. Note: All figures are in GBP.
