Wike punches Ayu, says ungrateful party chairman

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike blasted People's Democratic Party National Chairman Senator Iyorchia Ayu for his comments against Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom .

The PUNCH reported that Ayu said he had the power to stop Ortom's senatorial ambition and that of others eyeing various positions on the party platform.

However, Wike, while briefing reporters at his private residence in Rumiprikon, Obio/Akpor local government area, challenged Ayu on Sunday to carry out his threat.< /p>

He said it was unfortunate for Ayu to speak out against Ortom who made him become party chairman because the governor told him what he was doing wrong.

Wike, while reacting to Ayu's comment that no one can fire him, said that the problem was not to fire Ayu, but to honor his promise if he still had integrity in him.

"It's very unfortunate. No one said that Ayu should be fired. The word fire and keeping his promise are two different things," the governor said.

Wike said his side's position remained that since the party's constitution stipulated that there must be zoning for elective and political office, there was no way the candidate to the presidency and the national president of the party come from the same area.

He added: "Saying no one can fire him does not arise because no one said he should be fired. For you to be fired, there are procedures for firing people.

"If at this point you are the national chairman of a party who told Nigerians this is what you would do if this happened and now that it has happened, you run away. . How do you expect Nigerians to believe you now? How do you convince them to vote for your party when they know you won't stand up?

"I heard when he said he would have stopped Ortom from running. You see how ungrateful human beings are.

"This is the same Governor Ortom who begged us and said listen, 'I can take this risk and let him (Ayu) become the national president.' Governors agreed that no national president should come from where a governor comes from.

"We agreed on that. But Ortom came, and he's a man we respect, he said I want to promote my people. Let them participate in politics national and we said okay, in your honor we will agree.

"He is a man (Ayu) who has never campaigned anywhere. He is a man who has never bought a form or a poster. Even the money that 'they gave him to print posters, he never printed posters. Now he says he can arrest the man who brought him, who became his surety.'

Wike said Ayu probably hoped that Nigerians would give money to the party so that he would become a superintendent of money.
