Deposed cabinet minister Conor Burns is said to be in the running for a knighthood thanks to Boris Johnson, despite being sacked for 'gross misconduct'.

The MP was told on Friday he was to be made Sir - but now fears his 'career is over', according to the Sunday Times. Liz Truss is unable to block the date, it is reported.

Downing Street and Mr. Burns have been contacted for comment.

Boris Johnson's final two honors lists could arrive in the coming weeks and were already expected to hand out gongs to allies and cronies of the former prime minister.

Mr. Burns, a 50-year-old MP for Bournemouth West since 2010, was fiercely loyal to Mr Johnson and was appointed his parliamentary aide in 2017 when he was Foreign Secretary.

Last year Mr Burns returned to government employment under Mr Johnson - 16 months after he resigned following an unrelated standards inquiry.

He then sadly claimed that the Prime Minister had been 'ambushed with a cake' during the lockdown parties in Downing Street.

Mr. Burns was sacked as trade minister and lost the Tory whip on Friday, pending an investigation into alleged "inappropriate behaviour" at the Tory conference.

He has also been suspended as a patron of LGBT+ conservatives, pending the outcome of an investigation into his conduct.

The BBC reports that an eyewitness saw Mr Burns touch the thigh of a young man in a hotel bar.

Mr. Burns said on Friday he was not told the nature of the allegations and accused his party of "rushing judgment".

He added, "I will cooperate fully with the Party's investigation and look forward to clearing my name."
