Pitch Perfect: Bumper In Berlin Stars On Their Continued Trend Of Inappropriate “Ship” Names [Exclusive Interview]

Adam, you've been playing Bumper Allen on and off for over a decade at this point. How do you keep the character from feeling a single note after all these years?

DeVine: Well, I think that's what got me so excited about doing the show. In the movie, especially the first movie...the second movie, I have to do a little more and show a little more range, but for the show, I'm excited to show Bumper as a fully realized human being. /p >

He definitely showed so much growth! I am very proud of him. Sarah, over to you. The songs on this show fit so well in your voice, so I was curious if you could share the process of learning or developing these songs.

Hyland: Oh. Well, there are some original songs that I sing. The one at the end is written by [OneRepublic singer] Ryan Tedder, which is just a dream come true for me. I am so honored to be able to sing one of his original songs. But it was a bit crazy how fast everything was going. We would get the demo and then we had to know it in a day or two. So we were rehearsing, or whenever I was in my trailer or on my set chair or something, I just had my AirPods in there, rehearsing before I had to go in there and actually do it. Because it was really fast. But thank you very much. It means a lot to me, you have no idea.

Oh, I'm so happy to share! Adam, come back to yourself. Tell me about the track "Sour Pickles". Were they really so sour? Were they even pickles?

DeVine: Those were marshmallows! They have weird food in Germany. [jokes] No, they were sweet and sour pickles. But I really like pickles. People were coming up to me and saying, "Ah, pickles? Are you going to vomit? What?" And I'm like, "Pickles are delicious. I love pickles." So I think I would do very well on this show. Basically, it was like a parody or version of "Hot Ones", where you eat the hot wings and Sean Evans interviews you. And I already did. And I ate all 12 wings or whatever they give you. So I think if "Sour Pickles" was a real show, I think I'd do pretty well on that one too.

Oh, perfect.

DeVine: I'm human trash, so I eat anything.

Relatable. Ditto.

DeVine & Hyland: [laughs]
