Keir Starmer says government went from 'applauding nurses to firing them' in first round of PMQs this year as health worker strikes dominate the opening exchanges between him and Rishi Sunak.

The Prime Minister and the Labor leader clash as some 20,000 paramedics strike for the second straight time over pay and conditions.< /p>

On Tuesday the government introduced a bill in parliament which aims to enforce 'minimum service levels' in future industrial action.

Grant Shapps, the Business Secretary who introduced the bill in the Commons, was charged with an 'outrageous insult' after suggesting the paramedics' strike was 'putting lives at risk'.

Elsewhere, Mr Sunak was due to meet on Wednesday his Japanese counterpart Fumio Kishida to sign a defense pact between re the two countries aiming to counter the threat of China in the Asia-Pacific region.

"In this increasingly competitive world, it is more important than ever that democratic societies continue to stand side by side as we face the unprecedented global challenges of our time,” Sunak said in a statement ahead of the meeting.
