Premier League teams paid tribute this evening to former team-mate Christian Atsu, who was found dead under the rubble in Turkey.

Newcastle United observed a minute's silence at St James' Park for the Ghana international ahead of the game against Liverpool.

Everton had a round of applause at Goodison Park ahead of their game against Leeds.

Initial reports said Atsu, 31, had been saved from the devastating earthquake, but a day later his Turkish club Hatayspor said that was not true.

He had to leave Turkey a few hours before the disaster after obtaining permission to look for a new club in France because he wanted to play more.
