Rafael Nadal's pregnant wife in hospital and 'could undergo surgery' days before US Open

Rafael Nadal's wife Mery Perello has been admitted to hospital during the home stretch of her pregnancy in worrying scare ahead of the US Open later this month. Nadal is currently in the United States, where he is making his final preparations for the last Grand Slam of the season, while Perello has remained in Spain.

According to Perello, 31 weeks pregnant with Nadal's child, entered a private clinic room in Palma. The 34-year-old could undergo an imminent operation on the recommendation of her doctors, observing her carefully to avoid complications at such a crucial stage of her pregnancy.

Although Nadal was hundreds of miles away from his wife during the scare, she has been accompanied by relatives since being admitted on Monday. Perello's parents, his sister-in-law Maribel Nadal and one of his best friends were spotted in the clinic's cafeteria this week.

It remains to be seen if Perello's situation will impact Nadal's appearance at this year's US Open, but he appears to be preparing as usual from Wednesday. The draw for the 2022 showcase at Flushing Meadows will take place at 5pm on Thursday, with the Spaniard expected to be among the top seeds.

The revelation about Nadal and Perello's pregnancy emerged in mid-June after Hola magazine published images of the couple on vacation. They showed off the pair on a yacht with their friends, and Perello, in a bathing suit, sported some notable maternity curves.

A few days later, Nadal confirmed the news at a press conference and asked for privacy during the pregnancy. They have been together for almost two decades and married for almost three years and are now ready to start a family at the twilight of the Spaniard's illustrious career.

The couple are expecting a boy in October, a celebration that will coincide with their third wedding anniversary. Nadal hopes he can add his record 23rd career Grand Slam, his fifth US Open and his third of four Slams this season to add to the jubilant mood.

He will enter the US Open as the second seed behind world number one Daniil Medvedev, rightfully the tournament favorite given his status as defending champion after denying Novak Djokovic the Calendar Slam Last year. Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Djokovic make up the top five. However, the Serb could still withdraw if he cannot enter the United States due to his vaccination status.
