Future Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was accused last night of a potential conflict of interest over his wife's ties to Shell.

Akshata Murty has an estimated £690million stake in his father's company Infosys, which signed a lucrative pact with the oil giant last year.

Shell posted colossal profits of £9.5bn this week, doubling profits in a single year amid soaring energy prices.

The huge sums come as families in the UK face soaring bills and a cost of living crisis.

The Conservatives have faced calls to impose a windfall tax on energy giants to ease the burden on families struggling to heat and light their homes.

But links between Mr Sunak's family business and Shell - the world's second-largest oil company - have raised concerns about competing interests.

Howard Cox, Founder of FairFuelUK, said: "It is not true that our Prime Minister or any other Government Minister has any connection to commercial concerns which may conflict with the interests of the finances of the nation.

"Even though these ties are indirectly tied to family relationships, their hidden influence can still influence decisions that impact all of our lives."
