The author of the hit 1970s BBC sitcom So me Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em has died aged 82, his family has said.

Raymond Allen, who lived on the Isle of Wight , created the ill-fated character of Frank Spencer, immortalized by actor Michael Crawford.

The sitcom aired from 1973, attracting up to 20 million viewers.

Michael Crawford paid tribute to Mr. Allen as the "one-off". His family said he had brought "joy and laughter to millions of people".

Mr. Allen wrote a total of 22 episodes of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em starring the well-meaning, utterly accident-prone Frank Spencer, who went on to become one of the best-known characters in British television comedy.

Cinema cleaner

Speaking in a BBC documentary in 2016, Mr Allen recalled finding out his screenplay had been commissioned when he worked as a cinema cleaner in Ryde.
