The son of drug lord El Chapo has been arrested on suspicion of drug-related charges in a bombshell operation by heavily armed federal authorities in Mexico City.

Ovidio Guzmán, 32, was identified as one of the main producers and distributors of fentanyl and was arrested during an operation carried out this morning in the community of Jesús María.

Reports and social media images suggest a shooting took place before the arrest as areas of the city were blocked by armed police and burning vehicles blocked several exits from the city.

According to information from local media La Jornada, the hunt and detention of Guzmán led to blockades in several streets of Culiacán and incidents involving armed police in different parts of the city.

Vehicles on fire blocked the exits from the city of Culiacán and had paralyzed the city.
