New 'The Idol' teaser: Lily-Rose Depp is drawn into the crazy world of Weeknd

The Weeknd shared a new trailer for his upcoming series The Idol during his concert in Las Vegas on August 20. The show is set in the "gutters of Hollywood" and in the context of the music industry.

The Weeknd plays a self-help guru and leader of a modern cult, who develops a complicated relationship with a rising pop idol. In the trailer, The Weeknd receives a call and responds gently, "Hello, sweetheart."

Lily-Rose Depp plays Jocelyn, a rising music star. At one point, she struts around a record label wearing a barely there black dress. She gets fame, but at what cost?

"It's sex," says Jane Adams in the teaser. Dan Levy responds: "Is that sex?" Jane replies, “It's sex. That's what we sell."

The cast of The Idol is stacked. Other cast members include Suzanna Son, Troye Sivan, Moses Sumney, Jennie Ruby Jane, Eli Roth, Rachel Sennott, Hari Nef, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Dean, Ramsey and Hank Azaria.

The first teaser dropped in July 2022 and gave fans a glimpse into The Weeknd's twisted relationship with the Lily-Rose characters. "Why don't you be yourself?" The Weeknd asks Jocelyn at the table. She simply replies, "Because there's nothing relatable about me." At the end of the trailer, he wants to know if Jocelyn trusts him. She whispers, "Not really."

The series will mark The Weeknd's official acting debut, and he's going all-in with The Idol. He is known for his theatrical music video and appeared as himself in the 2019 Adam Sandler film Uncut Gems. He is currently wrapping up his After Hours til Dawn tour, where he has always gifted fans with footage from his show.

The Idol was co-created by The Weeknd, Sam Levinson of Euphoria and Reza Fahim. The series will consist of 6 episodes. HBO hasn't revealed a release date, but the teaser says it's "coming soon".
