The “M3GAN” dance continues its TikTok reign

Movie lounges, malls, bedrooms, gymnasiums: name a place, and M3GAN's dance was probably performed there. Months before “M3GAN” even premiered, TikTokers latched onto a particular dance scene from the horror movie, recreating the peculiar moves and starting a new viral trend.

First teased in the trailer last October, the sequence begins with the titular AI doll rolling from side to side and whipping its arms in front with Jell-O-like fluidity. After nailing an overhead cartwheel, she puts a raised leg against the blood-red wall, grabs a knife, and prepares to kill her next victim. A killer of humans and flippers? It's our kind of double threat.

As with most viral dance challenges, the variations are endless. Some designers wear beige dresses and tights to copy M3GAN's costume in the movie. Others mimic her movements to the beat of different songs, from Bella Poarch's "Dolls" and Taylor Swift's "It's Nice to Have a Friend" to Beyoncé's "America Has a Problem." Each video has, in turn, fueled the hype for the film, which has crushed the box office since its theatrical release on January 6.

While it's a standout moment, the dance scene wasn't actually included in the film's original script, director Gerard Johnstone told Entertainment Weekly. "It was one of those crazy, sleep-deprived thoughts at 3 a.m.," he said. "Wouldn't it be funny if the soundtrack suddenly became real and M3GAN ended up switching to the music being played?" The dance was re-enacted by choreographer Kylie Norris and hosted by Amie Donald, the 12-year-old actor who physically embodied M3GAN for parts of the film.

There's already talk of a potential sequel to "M3GAN," and if Universal Pictures greenlights it, hopes will be high for another deliciously spooky dance sequence. Read ahead to watch some of the best recreations to hit TikTok so far.
