Tory leadership election plunges into bitter row and swings right as MPs hold key vote

The Right split this morning between Liz Truss and 'Woke Warrior' Suella Braverman as politicians leaned ever further to the Right - and TWO candidates cited Margaret Thatcher

The Tory leadership race today descended into bitter feuds and swung even further to the right as MPs battled for support ahead of a close vote.

This morning, the top right-wingers were torn between Liz Truss – seen by many as battling Penny Mordaunt for a spot in the bottom two – and her “awake warrior” rival Suella Braverman.

Former leader Iain Duncan Smith and European Research Group leader Mark Francois supported Ms Truss while David Jones and Bernard Jenkin spoke out for Ms Braverman.

But only two candidates can stand in a vote of 180,000 Conservative members and Rishi Sunak is expected to be one of them.

Fierce competition has helped push the race further to the right - with candidates threatening to quit the European Convention on Human Rights and drop BBC licensing fees.
