Tottenham could bring Marcus Edwards back on the cheap thanks to the transfer clause

Tottenham are reportedly planning a January move for Sporting Lisbon star and former Spurs man Marcus Edwards.

The young midfielder came through Tottenham's academy and made a senior appearance before moving to Portugal in 2019.

Edwards spent two and a half seasons at Vitoria de Guimaraes, where he racked up 86 appearances in all competitions. The player also contributed with 20 goals.

During the January 2021 transfer window, the former England youth star was signed by Sporting Lisbon.

Since joining Estadio Jose Alvalade, Edwards has made 34 appearances. The player has also scored 10 goals and produced nine assists.

One of those goals came against Tottenham in a recent Champions League clash in north London. The match ended in a 1-1 draw, although the midfielder certainly caught the eye of his former employers.

Sporting finished third in their Champions League group after a 2-1 defeat at Eintracht Frankfurt. The result condemned the club to the Europa League, but Edwards still has a chance to take part in Europe's elite competition.

According to a report by Portuguese outlet Record, Tottenham are planning to make a move for the 23-year-old.

Edwards, who has a £52million release clause, recently confirmed his desire to return to England one day. He said: "It's my home, so of course I want to go back [Premier League] one day. I'm just focusing on what I'm doing here at the moment."

A move to former club Tottenham could represent his best chance of returning to the Premier League. Spurs, who inserted a 50% selling fee when selling the player, could now re-sign him without splashing a huge fortune.

Sporting have had a difficult start to the season, winning seven of their first 12 league matches. Edwards has scored three goals in his last four games and is in good form.

Tottenham, on the other hand, were flying at the start of the campaign. However, Conte's men have lost three of their last four games and lost ground to Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Conte recently admitted that his side are still far from winning trophies. The Italian manager would no doubt like to strengthen in the January transfer window as he continues to build a competitive squad.

Edwards is a name Tottenham could attract to North London in the New Year. His arrival would certainly boost the level of competition in the middle of the park.
