Twitter down for thousands worldwide as users say it's 'finally broken'

Thousands of Twitter users found themselves unable to access their accounts following a reported global outage, with some joking about the fact that the platform was now "down" after the Elon Musk takeover

Thousands of Twitter users are currently unable to access the social media platform during a global outage.

Web monitoring website Downdetector said many users in the UK and around the world were having difficulty with the site early Thursday morning.

The majority of reports appeared to come from the desktop site and peaked around 01:00 GMT, with the total number of outages decreasing over the next half hour.

Some people have taken to other platforms to joke that the website is now 'broken' after the turbulent period since Elon Musk bought the website for £36billion in October .

One person wrote, "Finally Twitter is down," while another, referencing the site's recent layoffs, said, "Where are the coders when you need them."

Other users who could still log in tweeted their reactions to the hashtag "#TwitterDown", and many said they accessed the site using the iOS app.

Elon Musk confirmed last week that he would step down as Twitter's CEO once he found someone "stupid enough to take the job".

After several weeks of public disputes with staff and massive layoffs, the billionaire Tesla had launched a public poll to ask him if he should remain at the head of the platform's operations.
