Liz Truss' government is on the brink of collapse after another chaotic day that saw the acrimonious resignation of her Home Secretary.

Last night a senior Tory official claimed Ms Truss had 'hours not days' in power, adding: 'It's Armageddon.'

Suella Braverman lashed out at Ms Truss' 'tumultuous' premiership as she stepped down and accused the government of 'breaking key commitments'.

His departure, which comes just five days after Kwasi Kwarteng was sacked as chancellor, means the prime minister has lost two people from all four major state offices in his first six weeks in office, while wondering if other Cabinet ministers might follow suit.

In a bid to salvage her struggling leadership, Ms Truss replaced Ms Braverman with Grant Shapps, a supporter of her rival Rishi Sunak in the Tory leadership race and a critic of his later abandoned plan to abolish the maximum rate of income tax. .

Paul Goodman, editor of the influential ConservativeHome website, said he had "never seen anything like the chaos" of Wednesday.

"I have to say, if you're looking for a coalition of chaos, Liz Truss is a one-woman coalition of chaos," he told BBC Two's Newsnight.

Sir Charles, visibly moved, told BBC News: "As a Tory MP for 17 years...I think it's a shambles and a disgrace. I think it's utterly appalling. I'm livid."

Several Tory MPs sided with him, including Maria Caulfield, who tweeted: 'Tonight we are all Charles Walker.

Meanwhile, there is speculation that the chairman of the Conservative 1922 backbench committee, Sir Graham Brady, has already received more than 54 letters calling for a vote of no confidence in the Prime Minister, the threshold to trigger one if Ms. Truss was not within the 12-month grace period for new leaders.
