A Vietnamese court has sentenced a man to death for the shocking murder of his girlfriend's three-year-old daughter by driving nails through her head.

Hanoi People's Court has ordered 30-year-old carpenter Nguyen Trung Huyen to be executed by lethal injection for the murder.

Huyen carried out the sick slaughter while sharing a home with his partner Nguyen Thi Luyen, 27, and his young daughter in Hanoi.

A dark hospital X-ray image of the girl's injuries shows nine nails driven deep into her skull.

Huyen selfishly recounted how the youth had "affected his own life", so he brutally killed her so he "wouldn't have to raise her".

The victim was Luyen and her ex-husband's third daughter, who lived with her mother after the couple divorced last year.

Since September 2021, Huyen has been known to have tortured the terrified cub on at least four occasions.

He allegedly forced her to drink pesticides, made her swallow fingernails and broke her arms in the first three attacks.

Then on January 17, he slapped her repeatedly, the court heard, after she did not respond and he tortured her with nails.

When Luyen found out what had happened, she immediately took her young daughter to Thach That District Hospital.

She was transferred to Saint Paul Hospital, where she went into a coma and died two months later.
