When is Eid al-Adha 2022? What is it and how is it celebrated?
Eid al-Adha is one of the most important dates in the Islamic calendar and is determined by moon sightings, not annual dates. Dhu al-Hijjah, which means "the month of pilgrimage", is expected to start soon and the festivities are planned for this weekend

Eid al-Adha is one of two Eids in the Islamic calendar, with Eid-al-Fitr being known as Lesser Eid, or simply Eid.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan and was celebrated earlier this year, but Eid al-Adha, or Feast of Sacrifice, falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah in the Islamic calendar.
It is a moment of celebration, commemorating Prophet Ibrahim's devotion to Allah for his willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail.
To honor his devotion, Muslims around the world sacrifice animals during Eid al-Adha in a tradition called Qurbani.
The date is approaching, with all signs that the holidays will be imminent over the next few days.

Unlike most religious dates and holidays, Eid al-Adha does not have a fixed annual date.
Instead, it is determined by the sighting of the moon, which is also the case for many Muslim holidays in the Islamic calendar.
Eid al-Adha falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, and is scheduled to be July 9 this year.
This year, Dhu al-Hijjah began on June 30, which means that Eid al-Adha will begin on Saturday, July 9.
Dhu al-Hijjah is not confirmed until the first faint crescent of the new moon is sighted.
