In comparison, Britons consume 86.4kg of fruit per year, according to the most recent data from 2020.

This puts the UK in 65th place in the international rankings.

Meanwhile, the United States ranks 51st, with the average American consuming 93.8 kg of fruit per year.

Fruit consumption data, shared by Our World in Data, a platform supported by Oxford University, is available for 195 countries.

The results were calculated by dividing the total weight of fruit consumed by the population.

Greece (142kg), Portugal (130.5kg) and Italy (129.9kg) eat the most fruit in Europe, according to the data.

At the other end of the world scale were Zambia (4.6 kg), Chad (7.1 kg) and Togo (7.4 kg).

The researchers also split the data into different types of fruit, revealing that the average person in the UK eats 20.3kg of oranges, 17.1kg of apples and 13.8kg of bananas per year, to name but a few.

In comparison, Americans consume 25.8 kg of oranges, 15.5 kg of apples and 11.2 kg of bananas.
