Andy Burnham backs recent rail strikes

Andy Burnham has said he will 'one day' consider running for Prime Minister as the Labor leader.

The Mayor of Greater Manchester insisted he was focused on his current role - and backing Keir Starmer - but suggested he had his eye on the top job.

The former cabinet minister made two unsuccessful bids to lead the Labor Party, losing to Ed Miliband in 2010 and Jeremy Corbyn in 2015.

He resigned as an MP ahead of the 2017 election and was elected Mayor of Greater Manchester that year.

Mr. Burnham, who has been dubbed 'King in the North' for his Covid battles with the Government, has at times been at odds with leaders and pressured Keir Starmer after a row over whether MPs in front had to join the picket lines.< /p>

When asked if he would consider running for Prime Minister, Mr Burnham told Sky News: 'Maybe one day if it would be something that people would support, but not now, as we have a leader of the Labor Party providing leadership during the cost of living crisis and I am happy to give Keir my full support.

"And I have a job to do in Greater Manchester...and I'm making big changes to public transport, which hopefully will get people out of it, and that's is where my entire focus is right now."< /p>

He added: "I'm just being honest, going forward, I said I'll serve a second full term as (mayor).

"If at some point beyond, well beyond this point where we are, that was something that was a possibility, I would consider it."
