Asian Network turns 20: “A safe space for British Asians”

When BBC Asian Network went national 20 years ago today, it was d written as being "a -stop shop for Asian communities".

It provided a platform for young British Asian musical talent, while welcoming guests renowned names such as Shah Rukh Khan, Alia Bhatt, Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone.

For many British Asians, the station provided "a safe space" where go, whether to listen to music or hear about current cultural issues.

"It's like a cool, safe and secure place, and almost comforting, knowing that the Asian network is there 24/7,” says fan Vishma Rai.

"And I don't think that can be said of anyone, even your friends," she told the BBC Newsbeat.

"I'm a young opinionated woman now. And I've never been that person, I was so shy when I was child," says Vishma, 27, from Bristol.

She has been listening for over 10 years and praises the station for the "positive impact" it got on her through her many talks.

"I didn't even allow myself to have an opinion. But Asian Network showed me that. ..
