A British tourist has died and a second is seriously injured after their motorbike crashed into the back of a garbage truck on a Thai island.

James Stephenson Young, 36, and a friend, named Pierre, 30, are said to have been drinking at a local bar in Koh Samui, in the Gulf of Thailand, before trying to get back to their hotel in the early hours of the morning Thursday morning.

They were driving a white Honda scooter when they slammed into the back of the bright yellow garbage truck while trying to overtake the vehicle on a narrow, winding road around 1am local time.

Police and paramedics arrived at the scene and performed CPR on James, who was a passenger, for approximately 10 minutes.

However, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pierre, whose last name has not been released, was taken to Koh Samui hospital for treatment.

Garbage truck driver Atthaphon Wichien, 42, said he called emergency services after hearing the two men crash into the back of the industrial waste vehicle.
