Hurricane Beryl flattens Carriacou Island in Grenada

Officials said the Category 4 storm caused “extreme” damage there and on the neighboring island of Petite Martinique when it made landfall on Monday, killing one person in the capital of Grenada.

A powerful Category 4 hurricane began sweeping the eastern Caribbean islands on Monday, devastatingly affecting Carriacou, a small island north of Grenada, officials said.

During a press briefing broadcast on social media, Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell said Carriacou had been “razed” in just half an hour and that government officials also expected "extreme" damage on the neighboring island of Petite Martinique.

One death was reported in Grenada's capital, St. George's, after a tree fell on a house. “This affects us,” Mr. Mitchell said. "The deceased is actually a relative of one of the people who spent the last 36 hours with us here at the National Emergency Operations Center."

The force of Hurricane Beryl — the first of this year's season — left a trail of destruction in its wake when it made landfall: trees snapped in two, widespread storm surges and roofs torn off as winds reached more than 240 km/h.

There was no electricity in Carriacou and Petite Martinique, and communication was difficult, said those responsible.

Mr. Mitchell said the full extent of the damage in Carriacou and Petite Martinique would not be clear until Tuesday morning, adding that he would travel to Carriacou as soon as it was safe to do so.
