Keanu Reeves leaves 'Devil in the White City' series on Hulu [EXCLUSIVE]

Keanu Reeves will no longer star in the Hulu series adaptation of "The Devil in White Town ", Variety learned exclusively from sources.

The show was first put into development at Hulu in 2019 and has been officially commissioned in series with the streamer in August 2022. It is based on the book of the same name by Erik Larson.

According to the official logline, the show "tells the true story of Daniel H. Burnham, a demanding but visionary architect racing to leave his mark on history with the Chicago World's Fair of 1893, and Dr. H. H. Holmes, America's first modern serial killer and the man behind the famous " Murder Castle" built in the shadow of the Fair."

Reeves was cast as Burnham in what would have been his first major role on American television, but the search is now for a replacement. No one has been cast as Holmes at the time of this publication.

Hulu representatives declined to comment. Representatives for Reeves did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment.

Martin Scorsese, Rick Yorn, Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Davisson of Appian Way, Stacey Sher, Sam Shaw , and Mark Lafferty are executive producers of the series. Sam Shaw is adapting the book for the screen and will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Lila Byock also serving as executive producer. ABC Signature will produce in association with Paramount Television Studios.

This is the final chapter in the long history of book development. DiCaprio acquired the rights in 2010 with the intention of adapting it into a film in which he would play the role of Holmes. Scorsese came on board to direct in 2015 with Billy Ray set to write the screenplay. It was first developed in Hollywood by Tom Cruise and Paula Wagner through their Cruise/Wagner banner through the Pebble deal with Paramount, but the option expired in 2004. Paramount bought the film rights back in 2007 and l 'set up with producers Michael Shamberg and Sher.
