The work will reduce the energy bills of poorer Britons by using prepaid meters, the Shadow Chancellor said.

Rachel Reeves insists the party would end the 'unjustifiable' practice that forces millions to pay more at the meter than those who pay by direct debit.

She thinks a Labor government would ensure four million people don't pay 'over the odds for the same gas and electricity'.

The party has brainstormed proposals to help struggling households in the face of soaring inflation and the energy crisis.

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown led attacks on the government, increasing pressure on him to even attempt to resolve the crisis.

Keir Starmer is expected to make several announcements next week on how to combat the worsening cost of living crisis.

Analysts have predicted that typical energy bills could reach around £3,500 in October and over £4,200 in January.

Ms Reeves, Mr Starmer and Shadow Energy Secretary Ed Miliband are said to have been working on the plans before the August Ofgem price cap.
