The Liberal Democrats have canceled their party's Autumn Conference, which would have clashed with the Queen's funeral.

The party also postponed major debates until the spring after the Queen's death.

Nick da Costa, who chairs the party's Federal Conference Committee, said the Liberal Democrats "want and need to show their respect to the Queen and the period of national mourning".

The conference in Brighton was scheduled to start on September 17 and continue until September 20. The Queen's funeral will take place on September 19.

Mr. da Costa, in an email update, said: "The sad news of the past few days has deeply affected our nation. And we now know that the Queen's funeral will take place on the Monday of our conference."< /p>

He added, "After careful consideration – and after consulting with as many people as possible – the conference committee and federal council have decided together with regret to cancel our fall conference and postpone the major debates. in the spring."

Earlier, Number 10 confirmed that no discussion is ongoing about rescinding the conference's upcoming recess – which will take place immediately after the mourning period.

Some feared that the long period of closure of Parliament could lead to delays in the implementation of the cost of living plan on October 1.

But the prime minister's official spokesman said the government does not believe the period of mourning will have an impact on this date.
