Conservatives criticized for creating migration meme based on BBC presenter giving middle finger

The Conservative Party has been told to “grow up” after trying to make a meme out of a swearing BBC presenter to criticize Labor on immigration.

On Wednesday, Maryam Moshiri, one of the channel's chief anchors, could be seen raising her middle finger at the camera as she returned to the screen for the midday bulletin. Ms Moshiri quickly realizes she is live and wipes her hand away in a flash before reading the headlines about Boris Johnson during the Covid investigation.

The official Conservative Party Twitter account has used the viral image in his attempt. to attack the opposition, using the caption: “Labour when you ask about their plans to tackle illegal immigration. »

< But a backlash quickly followed, with a number of party MPs calling for his dismissal, a demand which has so far been ignored.

Thursday evening, Alicia Kearns wrote: "Surprised that this has not - despite requests - been removed, it is unworthy of us." Tobias Ellwood also posted a tweet requesting its removal.

X users hit back with their own memes, including one of former education minister Andrea Jenkyns giving protesters the finger as she entered Downing Street last year last.

“We are governed by 14-year-olds,” wrote one, with another adding: “It will have cost you votes. Keep digging this hole, you're about to enter lava. »

Others have highlighted how net migration has increased under Conservative rule, reaching 745,000 in 2022, the highest figure on record.

In 2019, the Conservative Party program committed to reducing net migration levels from their previous levels of around 250,000 per year. The Conservatives were plunged into crisis over the issue again this week, with Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick resigning over a landmark deportation plan.
