Liz Truss holds huge lead over Rishi Sunak among Conservative members, poll shows

Liz Truss is on track to win the race to the Conservative leadership and enter No 10 next month, according to the latest YouGov poll.

The survey found that 66% of Conservative Party members vote for Truss, compared to 34% for Rishi Sunak, a times the don't know are excluded.

The YouGov survey for Sky News found that 57% of members have already voted, suggesting the former Chancellor is running out of time to convince the undecided.

The latest ConservativeHome survey of the conservative base offers similar results – showing Truss ahead of Sunak 60% to 28%. Some 60% of those polled have already voted.

However, Sunak insisted he "definitely" still had a chance to become the next prime minister despite a series of polls putting Truss in the lead . When asked if he thought he could win, he told ITV's This Morning: "Yes, definitely… I'm really excited to continue."

It comes as Conservative Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen - a Sunak supporter - said the party would be in a worse position at the next election after ousting Boris Johnson. "I didn't think we should have gotten rid of him," he told The Telegraph.
