Nagelsmann could lead a 'very exciting' era for Tottenham, says Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick thinks Julian Nagelsmann could have a 'very exciting story' if he becomes Tottenham's next head coach.

Former Manchester United caretaker boss Rangnick sees Tottenham as a club with huge potential and believes this could be an ideal next step for former Bayern Munich boss Nagelsmann.

Nagelsmann appeared to be a strong contender for the vacancy at Chelsea until he pulled out of the running, apparently paving the way for the arrival of Mauricio Pochettino.

Having won many admirers during successful spells with Hoffenheim and RB Leipzig before leading Bayern to the Bundesliga title last season, Nagelsmann has impressive credentials considering he is only 35 years old.

Speaking to German TV channel Sky Sport about Spurs and Nagelsmann, Rangnick said: "It can be a very, very exciting story. There is room for improvement, a lot of room for improvement. improving, and yet it's not a club where you're expected to finish in the top one, two or three right away."

Rangnick works as the head coach of the Austrian national team, but he has significant experience behind the scenes of the club game as a sporting director and knows that Nagelsmann will need support if he is set up in Tottenham.

For this reason, Rangnick says the North London club must ensure they appoint a sporting director, having recently lost Fabio Paratici to losing an appeal against his 30-month football ban, which stemmed from his move to Juventus.

On Nagelsmann, Rangnick said: "If Tottenham really want him, then I think it would be important to have a sporting director always there to support him."

Rangnick added: "I think Tottenham are an exciting club in many ways. They have probably one of the most modern and beautiful stadiums in the world at the moment. They have one of the best centers practice at the moment, and [president] Daniel Levy, who has run the club for many, many years."

Tottenham's next manager or head coach will want to refine the team's defence.

Spurs have conceded 51 Premier League goals this season, topping their expected goals against (xGA) figure of 41.83 by 9.17.

Ahead of Thursday's game against Rangnick's former club United, this disparity was the biggest negative gap between goals conceded and xGA in the English top flight this season.

The xGA figure reflects the quality of the opposing team's chances and the likelihood of scoring from those chances.

They thus occupy seventh place in the table, having conceded the most goals among the 14 highest ranked teams in the Premier League.
