Afenifere: Fasoranti speaks out on Adebanjo's status as interim leader

The leader of the Yoruba socio-political group, Afenifere, Reuben Fasoranti, has clarified his statement on the leadership of the group, saying that Ayo Adebanjo has not been removed as acting leader.

Mr. Fasoranti, who came under fire after hosting All Progressives Congress presidential candidate Bola Tinubu on Sunday at his residence in Akure, said he also did not order the group's meeting to return to his residence.

Reports quoted him as removing Mr. Adebanjo from his post after the latter's outburst over Mr. Fasoranti's endorsement of Mr. Tinubu on Sunday.

Mr. Adebanjo, who was openly critical of the visit, where members of the group supported the APC candidate, alleged that Mr. Tinubu's visit was aimed at dividing Afenifere.

Mr. Adebanjo has always maintained that Afenifere would support Labor Party candidate Peter Obi in the 2023 presidential election for reasons of fairness and justice.

He had argued that all regions had a fair chance to rule the nation and it was the turn of the Southeast.

Mr. Fasoranti, in a statement Thursday from his personal assistant, Adedapo Abiola, said his main concern was "the interest of the Yoruba in the complex political situation in Nigeria".

“It has come to Papa R.F. Fasonranti knows that certain sections of the media, especially social media, have attributed statements to him intended to confuse and polarize Afenifere,” the statement read.

"I have Papa's permission to say that he did not say that Chief Ayo Adebanjo is no longer the Acting Chief of Afenifere or that all future meetings of Afenifere should henceforth be held at his residence in Akure.

"Papa's main concern is the interest of the Yoruba in the complex political situation in Nigeria. It is also his concern that Afenifere survive in dignity and remain a provider of the interests of the Yoruba race."

Earlier, the group's former general secretary, Seinde Arogbofa, said the allegation that members of the group were compromised to support Mr Tinubu was baseless and false.

He said the group's stance was in the interest of the Yoruba nation and people.

He also said that the confusion that had arisen following Mr. Tinubu's visit to Akure on Sunday would be resolved within the group very soon.
