Appeals Court president warns court officials against misconduct

The President of the Court of Appeal, Judge Monica Dongban-Mensem, has instructed the 350 electoral tribunal officers to live above the edge while serving in the upcoming elections.

She warned that if any of them compromised the system, not only would they be removed from office, but they would be prosecuted in accordance with the recommendations of the Federal Judicial Service Commission.

The APC gave the warning in Abuja during a two-day capacity building workshop for those who would serve as electoral tribunal officials.

Underlining the importance of functional records for the efficiency of electoral tribunals, the CPA said the training was aimed at preparing officials for the task ahead.

She said, "It is part of your obligation to discharge your duties with the utmost good faith and not to get carried away with petty advances.

“Your integrity and that of the tribunal and its members are in the spotlight; so you need to make sure you're not being used as a weapon to truncate the process.

"Be sure to live above the councils so as not to bring discredit to the judiciary.

"Don't see it as an opportunity to make money to get rich, but rather, go there to build your name and your future because they literally say that a good reputation is better than money and gold.

"The court will not hesitate to deal with anyone found to be at fault in this regard.

“It is equally important to remember that you should constantly communicate with the Electoral Petitions Tribunal Unit at headquarters at regular intervals and report matters on which you are unsure in order to prevent communication breakdowns. .

“For emphasis, it is important to specify that applications to the courts are limited in time.

“It is therefore your responsibility to ensure that the processes are properly and timely filed once they are brought to the Registry in order to avoid any administrative injustice to the parties before these cases are tried.

"You must consider yourself worthy of being chosen to play in this respect.

"Our choice is based on the trust, competence and confidence that the court has in you, which I ask you not to erode in the performance of your duties in court.

“Allow me, once again, to mention that there is a tremendous amount of work ahead and you must indeed prepare for the challenges ahead,” the APC said.

Judge Dongban-Mensem added: "The Registry is a very important organ of an Election Petition Tribunal and its administrative duties include receipt of petition and other court proceedings for filing, service of proceedings timely court proceedings to parties, issuance of hearing notices, preparation of court proceedings and orders, custody and retention of court documents, compilation of records among various other duties and responsibilities.

"The efficiency, quality, efficiency, transparency and timeliness of the registry have a direct impact on the performance and justice of the electoral tribunal."
