Congressman calls US offer to Russia for Griner 'very good', optimistic deal reached

Some positive news on Brittney Griner's forehead from Colin Allred... the US congressman says officials have made "a very good offer" to Russia for the WNBA star - and he is now as confident as ever that she will be able to go home.

The rep couldn't go into specifics about the trade America sent to the Russians...but he told TMZ Sports he thinks the proposed trade is exactly what the foreign country looking into a deal for Griner.

"The ball is all in the Russians' court," Allred said Friday on Capitol Hill...before adding, "I think the prospects, in my opinion, look better now that they really haven't been at any time since she was taken."

But Allred said he feels Russia would like to impose a sentence on 31-year-old center Phoenix Mercury before he accepts any trade offers.

The former Baylor soccer player, however, said he was optimistic that would eventually go down at some point, hopefully soon.

"I think it's a matter of time," Allred tells us, "but I think it's going to happen."

Griner has been detained in Russia since mid-February after authorities said she had hash oil in her luggage at a Moscow airport. She has since pleaded guilty to the charges and faces a sentence of up to 10 years behind bars.
