EPL roundup: Aribo slips to bottom with Southampton

The Premier League resumed on Boxing Day, but there were no heartwarming results for any of the Nigerian stars who were in action.

At St. Mary's, Joe Aribo came on for Southampton against Brighton in the second half, but he couldn't save the Saints who suffered a 1-3 loss to Brighton.

Saturday's defeat, the fourth in a row for Southampton, dropped them to bottom, neck-deep in relegation waters.

When the day kicked off, Frank Onyeka was not on the roster for the derby between Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur.

In the end, the Bees lost a two-goal lead by settling for a disappointing 2-2 draw against Antonio Conte's men.

Brentford took the lead thanks to Vitaly Yanelt's first-half goal, then Ivan Toney doubled their lead in the second half after Harry Kane wanted a penalty for what looked like a legitimate foul.< /p> READ ALSO:

Spurs pulled one back in the 64th minute with Kane heading in a tight cross. The goal set Kane up to the enviable goalscoring record in every Boxing Day game he appeared in.

Moments after Kane halved Brentford's lead, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg made it 2-2 to set up a dramatic final.

Spurs tried to snatch all three points in the dying moments with Kane and Heung-min Son closing in but in the end the spoils were split between the two teams.

The point took Brentford to 20 for the season, while Tottenham have 30 points but have lost ground in their battle for the top four.

Home losses

Things were worse for Alex Iwobi and his Everton teammates who, despite scoring their first goal, lost 2-1 to fellow relegation fighters Wolverhampton.

Iwobi played for 90 minutes but failed to put a smile on Frank Lampard's face as the coach now faces increased threats of losing his job.

At the King Power Stadium, two fellow Nigerians Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi were both sentenced to defeat at home.

The Foxes were beaten 3-0 by the raging Newcastle side.

Chris Wood converted a third-minute penalty to give the Magpies a dream start before Miguel Almiron added a second in the seventh minute.

Shortly after the half hour mark, Joelinton headed in from a Kieran Trippier corner to make it 3-0 as Newcastle secured their sixth victory on the rebound.

Although Brendan Rodgers brought on Iheanacho and Ndidi in the 71st and 72nd minutes respectively, the pair could not undo the damage already done as Newcastle moved up to second in the Premier League table.

Other lights

In other Boxing Day fixtures, another away win was recorded at Villa Park where Liverpool secured a 3-1 victory over Aston Villa

Fulham also enjoyed an away winning streak beating Crystal Palace 3-0.
