Fear Allah, keep your promises, Don tells politicians

A university professor, Prof. Rafatu AbdulHamid, has called on those seeking political office in the upcoming general elections to fear Allah and keep their promises if they come to power.

Professor Abdul Hamid made the call at a forum titled "Using Inter-Religious Dialogue as a Tool to Promote National Integration", sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETfund), held on Tuesday in the University of Abuja.

Abdul Hamid, a professor of Islamic studies specializing in Islamic thought and gender studies, called on politicians to be peacemakers and to understand that only Allah gives power to whom He wills.

The donation asked politicians to govern with sincerity and be guided by their doctrines and religious teachings.

She said the program could not have come at a better time to engage young people who make up a significant percentage of the electoral population and imbibe them in the culture of peace.

Abdul Hamid, the program's co-lead researcher, said: "Those who ask people for mandates are either Christians or Muslims. My heartfelt advice to anyone running for office is that Christianity and Islam preach peace. If that is the case then every politician should be a peacemaker. Whatever they want to do must be in line with their religious doctrines and teachings and once they do, our country will be fine better.
