Governor Uzodinma dismisses the commissioner

Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State on Saturday approved the immediate dismissal of State Commissioner for Labor and Productivity, Ford Ozumba.

The withdrawal was contained in a statement released Saturday in Owerri by Information and Strategy Commissioner Declan Emelumba.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that no reason has been given for the dismissal of the commissioner who was tasked to hand over to the permanent secretary of the ministry with immediate effect.

It is unclear at this time whether Mr. Ozumba's dismissal was related to the workers' strike in the state.

State workers, under the auspices of the Nigeria Labor Congress, embarked on an indefinite strike on March 8 against alleged interference by the Imo State government in the election of new union leaders.

NLC Chairman Joe Ajaero, who disclosed in a statement on Tuesday, accused the IMO government of using armed thugs and members of the Nigerian police to disrupt the conduct of union elections in the state.

The NLC chairman alleged that the Imo state government “sought to influence the outcome of the elections in the state”, by offering gratuities to delegates to vote for their “chosen candidates ".

“This interference was resisted by delegates who refused ungodly offerings and bait to vote for their chosen candidates,” he said.

Mr. Ajaero claimed the state government was furious at the delegates' rejection of their offers and used violence to disrupt the exercise.

Contacted on Thursday, Governor Uzodinma's spokesman, Oguike Nwachukwu, refuted the allegations.

Mr. Nwachukwu told PREMIUM TIMES that there was no such violence against NLC members in the state.
