Jigawa closes schools as students take exams for fear of attack

The Jigawa state government has ordered the immediate closure of all public schools in the state for fear of attacks on schools across the state.

Schools were abruptly closed on Wednesday as students took their final exams.

The sudden closure has caused apprehension and panic among residents and students. Many students were seen stranded, waiting to be evacuated out of town.

State Department of Education spokesman Wasilu Umar confirmed the school closures at PREMIUM TIMES, but declined to comment further.

But a primary school principal at one of the schools in Dutse, the state capital, told this newspaper that "we are being asked to close and release the students immediately.

"Students have not yet been able to sit for Examinations of Basic Sciences and Knowledge of the Islamic Religion (IRK ) before they are asked to leave.

“The closure is for an indefinite period until further notice. We believe this is due to the deteriorating security situation in the state,” the director added.

In addition, one of the students at Nuhu Sanusi Government Secondary School told reporters that he was asked to leave without taking the civics exam scheduled for tomorrow.
